for life a life must be given, an offering your own
laid bare, ground down, out stretched.
pains tick past the days to months
all futures wash at your feet, lapping in and out,
the dark shadows with the shimmering sun.
foot first a stepping stone step again,
repeat.
moments pass with disdain, passing silently
joy with despair bound by, arm in arm
life must be given for life, and suffered.
suffered and enjoyed with clenched hands,
with teeth clamped, with eyes red and voice hoarse,
heart ached and boots scuffed.
most wretched darkness and glittering light
a wondrous sentence, a maddening gift.
agonising footfall after footfall
